Minimally invasive lung evaluations
The Bronchoscopy Suite at UW Medical Center - Montlake provides minimally invasive procedures to evaluate problems with the lungs, lung lining (pleural spaces) and lymph nodes within the chest.
Bronchoscopy is performed by pulmonologists and uses a thin, flexible, lighted camera to look directly into the airway while topical and intravenous sedation is provided for patient comfort. The procedure is often combined with fluid sampling or biopsy in order to diagnose infection, cancer, inflammatory conditions or other types of lung disease. In addition to bronchoscopy, other procedures performed in the suite include thoracentesis, in which fluid from the lung’s lining can be removed to diagnose similar conditions or relieve breathing difficulty.
Other providers in the bronchoscopy suite include nurses, respiratory therapists and medical assistants. Procedures are often coordinated with other appointments—including clinic visits and CT scans—with bronchoscopists working closely with other pulmonologists, radiologists and pathologists to manage a variety of conditions.
