Putting the patient first

Patient- and family-centered care is an innovative approach to the planning, delivery and evaluations of health care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships among patients of all ages, families and providers. It is an ongoing grassroots effort that includes staff at every level of UW Medicine, as well as patient and family advisory councils.

The core components of the patient- and family-centered care approach are to provide a welcoming physical environment, respect for patient and family values, empowerment and collaboration with the patient and family, coordination and integration of care, comfort and support, and access and navigation skills.

The approach pays extra attention to the small details that make patient and family stays and interactions at UW Medicine facilities a little less stressful. Those details could include help navigating health plans and billing, connecting with classes and support groups or just knowing whom to call when you have a question.
