Nationally recognized, team medicine approach to lung transplants
The lung transplant program at UW Medical Center was established in 1991 and is the only lung transplant program in the Pacific Northwest. The first lung transplant at UW Medicine was performed in 1992. Our team performs up to 60 transplants per year and has done nearly 1000 lung transplants.
We provide lung transplantation for a wide variety of patients including those with emphysema/COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and other interstitial lung diseases, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, sarcoid, lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), as well as other less common lung diseases. Combined lung transplantation with other organ transplantation (such as heart or liver) is also available if needed.
Our lung transplant program emphasizes a multidisciplinary team approach through all phases of the transplant process. This includes involvement from patients, their families and support persons, their communities and their community pulmonary physicians.
Recipients of a lung transplant receive lifelong care from the lung transplant team, which is comprised of specialists in pulmonary transplant medicine, thoracic surgery, rehabilitation medicine, nursing, pharmacy, nutrition, social work, laboratory medicine, radiology and pulmonary diagnostics. Additional specialty services are also available if needed.
