Dr Karen Souter is the vice-chair for education and the residency program director in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. She is a UW professor of anesthesiology with a clinical interest in neuroanesthesiology.

Dr. Souter received her medical degree and postgraduate training in anesthesiology (F.R.C.A.) in the UK and fellowship training in neuroanesthesiology at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. She practiced as a consultant neuroanesthesiologist at the University of Southampton in England until 2001.

Dr. Souter moved to the University of Washington in 2002 and became residency program director in 2005. She is responsible for training 110 anesthesiology residents and oversees the anesthesiology fellowship programs. In 2011, she received the ACGME “Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach” award in recognition of her work related to resident education.

Dr. Souter is an active member of many professional societies related to anesthesia and education. She is secretary of Society for Education for Anesthesia and is currently serving as president-elect of the Association of Anesthesiology Core Program Directors.
