About the UW Medicine Transfer Center
UW Medicine is a world-class academic health system. We accomplish our mission — improving the health of the public — by providing patient care, educating tomorrow’s health professionals and conducting leading-edge medical discovery. The UW Medicine Transfer Center, which links a four-state region to health-care expertise, is one of our programs.
Every day and around the clock, the UW Medicine Transfer Center works with physicians and transport staff to facilitate rapid and safe transfers of patients with emergent or urgent illness or injury from healthcare facilities in the WAMI region (Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) to Harborview Medical Center and UW Medical Center in Seattle.
To maximize the chances of survival and good outcomes we recommend clinically proven stabilization protocols for transporting patients with burns, aortic aneurysms and/or aortic dissection, and other potentially life-threatening conditions.
Download protocols for burns, ruptured aortic aneurysms and/or aortic dissection and patients with sepsis below.
Additionally, the center provides physicians immediate, 24/7 access to UW Medicine specialists who can provide medical consultation, including reviewing radiology images that are sent electronically.

A Transfer Center nurse helps coordinate all aspects of a patient’s transfer. We partner with Airlift Northwest to provide air medical transport and with agencies specializing in ground medical transport to ensure patients arrive quickly and safely.
Written follow-up information regarding the patient’s hospitalization, including discharge summaries and operative reports, are sent to the referring provider upon the patient’s discharge.
Send digital radiology images
After initiating patient transfer, healthcare professionals may send digital radiology images from their PACS, the archiving and communication system for storing, managing and sending digital radiology images and electronic medical records, via virtual private network.
This allows our staff to expedite the care of the patient by beginning a treatment plan prior to the patient’s arrival. Sending digital radiology images also reduces the need to duplicate the images, which can be lost or incompatible when sent by CD.
Follow your patient with U-Link
Healthcare professionals can follow their patients through the UW Medicine health system using
U-Link. This service allows professionals providing direct care to access their patients’ electronic medical record. Providers can print or copy portions of the record as needed.
