How to Choose a Home Blood Pressure Monitor

Welcome to the UW Medicine Track My Health program! This packet includes information to help you choose a home blood pressure monitor. You can always reach out to your care team with any other questions you have.

Choosing a blood pressure monitor

The American Heart Association recommends home monitoring for all individuals with high blood pressure. This will help healthcare providers determine the effectiveness of treatment and individuals requiring closer monitoring with risk factors of high blood pressure and/or conditions related to high blood pressure.

The accurate measurement of blood pressure is essential for remote monitoring. One important aspect of accurate measurement is whether the blood pressure measurement device has been validated for clinical accuracy.

Before purchasing a blood pressure monitoring device, please visit the US Blood Pressure Validated Device listing at the Validate BP site, validatebp.org, and choose a device that is recommended on this site. In general, choose an arm cuff for home blood pressure monitoring. If your doctor indicates that a wrist cuff may be better for you, then choose one of these listed devices.

If you want your blood pressure measurements to go directly to your MyChart “Track My Health” application, please purchase a blood pressure monitor that Apple Health (iPhone) or Google Fit (Android) state are compatible with their devices.
