Recognizing the signs of labor
Birthing options
Our teams are ready to care for every type of pregnancy and birth. From uncomplicated births assisted by midwives to specialized maternity care for high-risk pregnancies, we offer a full spectrum of pregnancy care and childbirth services.
- Vaginal birth: Most babies arrive by vaginal birth. At UW Medicine, you have a range of options for either non-medicated or medicated vaginal birth.
- Cesarean (C-section) birth: When a vaginal birth isn’t possible, doctors can deliver your baby through an incision in your abdomen and uterus. We schedule some C-sections in advance but can also perform others when unplanned and urgently needed to deliver your baby quickly. When your baby arrives, you have the option to see the baby through a clear drape and have skin-to-skin contact while still in the operating room.
- Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC): If you have experienced a cesarean delivery in the past and are interested in a vaginal birth, our team will work with you and determine if it is safe for you to have a trial of labor after cesarean. We will support you and your baby throughout the process.
