The UW Medicine Pituitary Program is a national referral center for the evaluation and treatment of pituitary tumors, recurrent pituitary adenomas and tumors or disorders of the hypothalamic-pituitary region.
Our team can develop a treatment plan in conjunction with the referring physician, give second opinions or provide ongoing management. We are committed to excellence in patient care, to the advancement of knowledge regarding all aspects of pituitary diseases, and to education and involvement of referring physicians in the care of their patients referred to our clinic.
Presentation, diagnosis and treatment
Patients are presented at the weekly Skull Base Tumor Board at Harborview Medical Center, which is attended by endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, neuroradiologists, and radiation therapy physicians. After presentation, the team prepares a diagnostic and therapeutic plan for each patient, which is also provided to the referring physician.
Physicians and nurses insert IVs, administer testing agents and continually monitor all patients, while a technician ensures precisely time blood sampling and hand delivers these samples to our laboratory.
Available tests include ACTH (Cortrosyn) stimulation, insulin tolerance, CRH stimulation, TRH stimulation, GnRH stimulation, oral glucose tolerance, and growth hormone reserve testing.
The UW Medicine Pituitary Program can also arrange for complete outpatient or inpatient diagnostic testing for Cushing's syndrome, including bilateral inferior petrosal sinus ACTH sampling, which is considered the definitive test for Cushing's disease in patients without tumors visible on head scans.
Our facilities include examination rooms, pituitary test center, clinic area for dynamic hormone testing and a comfortable conference area.
