Additional criteria for students seeking a rotation in the Department of Medicine

Criteria

Applications for the 26-27 academic year will be accepted starting January of 2026. A limited number of students will be accepted and scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis for the limited spaces available.

Visiting students must adhere to the UW rotation schedule and may only rotate during one of these three four-week time periods on the UW schedule: Autumn B, Autumn C and Winter A. For the 26-27 academic year these are:

  • Autumn 4 wk: 10/19/26 - 11/13/26
  • Autumn 4 wk: 11/16/26 - 12/11/26
  • Winter 4 wk: 01/04/27 - 01/29/27

Off-cycle rotations will not be accommodated under any circumstances.

Sponsoring faculty must agree to a weekly check-in with both the student and the main faculty preceptor (if the sponsor is not working with them directly) and should be prepared to assist in giving feedback to the student if necessary.

Sponsoring faculty will be responsible for any logistical support that would not usually be needed by a UW student (e.g. additional EMR coaching or extensive help with oral case presentations).

The sponsoring faculty and the visiting student must have a pre-existing professional relationship (not a personal relationship) sufficient for the sponsor to comment on the student’s clinical and interpersonal skills. This must be documented clearly in the sponsor letter.

In the rare circumstance in which the Associate Clerkship Director, Clerkship Director and/or UWSOM Deans decide a visiting student can no longer be accommodated on their rotation for any reason after it has started, the sponsor may be responsible for arranging a back-up clinical experience working with the sponsor personally or a close colleague.
