Montlake Bridge Closure Impacts Access to UW Medical Center and Clinics

On Aug. 9, 2021, Montlake Bridge repairs will begin. The Montlake Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic for a continuous 26-day span — August 9 to September 3 — and an additional five weekends in the fall (dates pending). Note: We will update this page if the construction schedule changes.

The UW Medical Center Montlake campus, UW Medical Center Roosevelt, the primary and urgent care clinic at Ravenna and the Sports Medicine Center at Husky Stadium will remain open for all services. Patients will need to plan on extra travel time to allow for detours and unusual traffic. Light rail transportation is encouraged (as closures will not affect light rail transit).

What you need to know about the Montlake Bridge closure

An average of 40,000 to 66,000 drivers use the Montlake Bridge daily. Washington State Department of Transportation crews plan to replace the 20-year-old grid deck and repair bridge joints. This work will help keep the bridge safe and reliable as traffic demands continue to grow.

Frequently Asked Questions

This summer and fall, construction crews will replace over 80 metal panels on the bridge’s 20-year-old worn metal grid deck and repair the mechanical components needed to keep the Montlake Bridge safe and reliable. In addition, six lines of support beams will be added, reducing strain on the panels. The work will be done by crews contracted with the Washington State Department of Transportation. More information about this work is on the WSDOT website. The detour map and possible alternate routes are online at: uwmedicine.org/montlake-bridge.

There are several Montlake Bridge closures scheduled this summer and fall.

Closed to vehicles, sidewalks open:

  • Aug. 9 – Sept. 3
  • The bridge will be closed to all vehicles for 26 days to replace the bridge deck panels (except first responders with sirens). Sidewalks will stay open for people who walk or ride bikes.

Closed to all:

  • Select fall weekends
  • This fall, the bridge will be in the raised position for up to five weekends (dates pending), closing it to all travelers. Crews will replace key mechanical parts of the bridge.

All UW Medicine locations will be open to provide care during all bridge closures. Plan extra travel time to get to and from impacted locations. Bridge closures may impact travel to these locations:

  • UW Medical Center – Montlake
  • The Sports Medicine Center at Husky Stadium
  • Roosevelt Clinics
  • Primary and Urgent Care at Ravenna

Sidewalks will be open during the summer closure only (Aug. 9 to Sept. 3). Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to cross the bridge, as well as first responder vehicles with sirens. During the five fall weekend closures, the bridge will be in the raised position and closed to all vehicle and foot traffic.

No. All vehicles will be rerouted during both phases of construction and cannot cross the bridge. Please consider using Link light rail (www.soundtransit.org) or visit King County Metro’s service advisories webpage to learn more about rerouting. https://kingcounty.gov/depts/transportation/metro/alerts-updates/service-advisories.aspx

Most vehicles and public transit will be detoured to I-5 North and the University exits including 45th and 50th Streets during bridge closures. The primary detour and any alternate routes are on the map online at: uwmedicine.org/montlake-bridge.

To get to the UW Medical Center, we highly recommend using Link light rail if possible, as the station is located across the street from the hospital and will not be affected by any road closures. For other University area sites, public transit is a great option. If driving or taking public transit, please allow extra time for detours and traffic. The detour map and alternate routes are online at: uwmedicine.org/montlake-bridge.

All of our parking facilities will be open and will operate normally. At the UW Medical Center - Montlake campus, barriers outside the Triangle and Surgery Pavilion parking structures will prevent turns towards Montlake Boulevard, but drivers will still be able to follow detours to access Montlake Boulevard via NE Pacific Place.
