Ryutaro Hirose, MD is a general and multiorgan abdominal transplant surgeon that specializes in both adult and pediatric liver, kidney and pancreas transplantation. Dr. Hirose believes in holistic care of all patients with organ failure and truly believes in a team approach. He is passionate about influencing and improving national policies to facilitate care of all patients in need of transplants. He has trained numerous fellows in his long career as a transplant surgeon and enjoys helping to shape the future of transplant surgery. He hopes eventually to see a solution to the ubiquitous problem of the shortage of donor organ in the future.

Dr. Hirose’s clinical expertise includes complex liver transplants that includes partial liver transplants, living donor liver transplants, as well as kidney and pancreas transplants. He also has extensive experience in certain areas of surgical oncology, such as locally extensive hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies that may be difficult to resect, and unusual or extensive retroperitoneal sarcomas e.g. originating from vena cava. He is also the Professor of Surgery teaching Transplant Surgery at the University of Washington.
