Paul Swanson, M.D., is a board certified pathologist and lead pathologist for Gastrointestinal, Hepatic and Pancreatic Pathology for UW Medicine. He is also a UW professor of Pathology and adjunct professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology and medical director of UW Medicine’s Gastrointestinal Pathology Histology Laboratory.

Dr. Swanson serves in various roles in support of the clinical, teaching and academic missions of UW Medicine Pathology programs.

Dr. Swanson earned his M.D. from Oregon Health Sciences University. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology (Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology) and has completed a course in Medical Leadership at the Cumming School of Medicine. His clinical and research interests include gastrointestinal, hepatic and pancreatic diseases, neoplasms of bone and soft tissue, research in the applications of immunohistochemical techniques to cancer diagnosis, quality assurance principles in and error mitigation in pathology.

Personal Interests

In his free time Dr. Swanson enjoys gardening, Old English, Middle English and Early Modern English and talking with cats.
