Dr. Aitken is the director of the Pulmonary, Cystic Fibrosis and Medical Subspecialty Clinics at the University of Washington Medical Center. She is a professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. In addition to general pulmonary medicine, she is an expert in cystic fibrosis. She conducts research related to clinical and translational medicine studies in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Dr. Aitken earned her bachelor’s degree and medical degree from the University of Edinburgh. She came to the UW for a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine. She has served on the UW Faculty since 1985. She is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, a member of the American Thoracic Society and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. She has been honored with several awards including “Top Doctors, WA Met Magazine”, “America’s Top Physicians,” “Best Doctors in America” and “Professional of the Year” by the Cystic Fibrosis Research Inc.

Patient Care Philosophy

I like to work with patients in a multidisciplinary setting to allow most of their medical needs to be met at one visit. We achieve this in the Pulmonary and Cystic Fibrosis Clinics.
