About Lydia A. Chwastiak

Lydia A. Chwastiak, M.D., is trained in internal medicine and psychiatry. Dr. Chwastiak’s has been providing medical care within an urban community mental health center over the past decade.

Dr. Chwastiak’s clinical interests include schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, and bipolar and related disorders. Her research interests include schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, chronic medical illnesses, health services, medical care of the seriously mentally ill and primary care psychiatry. She has focused her clinical and research interests on the intersection of chronic medical illness and serious mental illness. For example, she has investigated the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors among veterans with serious mental illness as well as their healthcare costs and disparities. Her recent projects include developing and testing a community mental health center-based team approach to treating poorly controlled type 2 diabetes among outpatients with schizophrenia.
