Skin cancers are frightening, and their treatment can be almost immediately disfiguring. Dr. Katz is extraordinarily capable at allaying patient fears by clearly providing treatment options and explaining their varying efficaciousness. Her validation of patient choices is empowering to the patient and increases compliance. And that means she is not only technically competent and an effective doctor but also a gifted listener and compassionate: she is an active participant in the treatment, not a distant prescriber. I served on UWMC's Service League Board and Ethics Advisory Committee back in the 1980s and 1990s, at the time Rob Muilenburg was Executive Director. He had the organization adopt the mantra, "To care for the patient, you must first care for the patient." Dr. Katz exemplifies UWMC physician care at the highest level.
