About Habibollah Rahbar
Habib Rahbar, MD, FSBI is a professor in the University of Washington Department of Radiology, where he serves as the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and the UWMC Chief of Service. He is a board-certified radiologist in the breast imaging section and co-director of the Quantitative Breast Imaging Lab at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Dr. Rahbar earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his MD from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed his radiology residency training and breast imaging fellowship at the UW and stayed on as faculty upon graduation.
His clinical practice at Fred Hutch and UWMC – NW includes digital mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis (or “3D mammography”), breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and image-guided procedures of the breast. Dr. Rahbar’s research is focused on improving the management of ductal carcinoma in situ. Known as DCIS, this early-stage breast cancer begins in the milk ducts and has not spread to the surrounding breast tissue. It is difficult to predict which women with DCIS will go on to develop invasive breast cancer. His research includes the identification of MRI features that can be used to improve management of ductal carcinoma in situ, the use of non-contrast MRI techniques to identify and characterize breast cancers, and the identification of MRI markers of risk of developing breast cancer. His goal is to offer more precise care for patients by better matching treatments to biology through imaging.
