What Our Residents Say

Fiona

The reason I chose Harborview’s residency program is because I felt the camaraderie and the stability. It is a place where we can have an intense trauma unit, but there are enough people around me that care about the same type of patients that I care about. We work together to make a difference. I felt like this was the type of place that was going to make that happen.

One of my favorite parts of the residency program was meeting my colleagues. We work on a very hard unit and the things that bond us together are not just our work, our workload, and our compassion for patients, but also the compassion we have for each other. We always look out for each other and help each other. I really love all my co-workers.

I chose Harborview’s Nurse Residency Program because it nurtured me through the process of being a mental health specialist all the way through nursing school. I am thankful to have the opportunity to get so much great information through the Nursing Residency Program that has equipped me with the ability now to move forward in my career.

Frequently asked questions

What are the deadlines for applying for the nursing residency program?

Harborview hires continually. Hiring dates determine which cohort you attend. There are three cohorts per year: Spring, Winter, and Fall.

How many hours per week do residents work?

Residents are hired at 90-100% FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) which is equal to 72-80 hours in a 2-week pay period. FTE may be decreased after 12 months by approval.

When do I attend NRP seminars?

The seminars are eight hours per month for a year as part of the transition to practice to give residents a solid foundation for becoming a professional registered nurse.

Am I obligated to stay at Harborview after the completion of my residency?

Yes. It is a required yearlong program.  There is a hiring agreement that asks for a two-year commitment to your unit (the program is part of this time, not additional).

How long is the program?

Twelve months.
