Our mission is to improve the health of the community by linking evidence based nutrition to the healthy foods we serve and to the education we provide staff, patients, and the community.

Our team of experts meets every month to review our menus for health and wellness. This team that we love to call the “Healthy Committee” is made of our director, managers of different areas, our talented soux chef, clinical dietitians, and our buyer.

As an important department in our leading academic medical center, we remain grounded in research-based nutrition and don’t look to the latest fads to change our menus. We are constantly working to connect the dots between research, good food, and education. Through the Wellness Program the Healthy Committee has launched programs such as our monthly Farmer’s Market, Meatless Mondays, Healthy Beverages Initiative, and Farm Fresh Fridays. We have been featured in the media, especially for our local purchasing efforts as we are working closely with local farmers to bring the UWMC community the best local food we can find.

Farmer’s Market

Our Farmer’s Market is held monthly in the Plaza Café sunroom. It is a great time for UWMC guests and staff to come together to enjoy local and organic produce and foods. We often have a featured meal for the day; look for the bbq on the patio when the Seattle summer weather lets us outside! When you come to the Farmer’s Market, keep an eye out for delicious free samples too.

    Meatless Mondays

    ​ Are you looking for a way to improve your weekly food habits, reduce saturated fat intake, and increase your consumption of healthy fruits and vegetables? Meatless Monday is here for you! The Plaza Café has joined the national movement that started in 2003 with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Since then many individuals, cafes, and even cities have gone meatless on Mondays.

    Beyond the great health benefits of Meatless Mondays, there are also ecological benefits. We are reducing our climate impact by going meatless in the hotline weekly.

    You can find a nice variety of healthy vegetarian options available in the hotline every Monday. Looking for more vegetarian options? You are sure to find additional selections throughout the week in many areas of the Plaza Café.

    Did you know we buy local? Over a quarter of our purchasing dollars are spent locally and that number is growing. To highlight some of our favorite local farmers, we celebrate Farm Fresh Fridays in the Plaza Café. Come down to the café to find our Farm Fresh Friday special, featuring foods from a local farm – right here in Washington.

    Local Purchasing

    ​We buy from local suppliers as much as we can and are constantly looking for ways to increase our local line of ingredients. We have an award-winning program for our leadership in local purchasing in health care food service.
