The Palliative Care Center of Excellence integrates, coordinates and strengthens education in palliative care across UW Medicine with a focus on interprofessional education. Using a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach, Center faculty members educate students and professionals in the science and art of palliative care.
The goal of palliative care is to improve the quality of life for patients with chronic or life-limiting illnesses and to support those who care for them – including family members, friends and clinicians – at any stage of illness. The Palliative Care Center of Excellence educational model emphasizes patient-centered care, open and honest communication and collaboration.
UW Medicine students, physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, spiritual care providers and others are trained to systematically query and listen to patients and family members express their understanding of the situation they are facing, as well as their hopes, fears and concerns. Together, the patient, family and healthcare professionals develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses not only physical symptoms, but also emotional, social and spiritual needs, and the practical aspects of daily living.
