Participants, volunteers and donors alike find Team Transplant to be a positive and supportive community that is welcoming to all. Team Transplant began with just 35 members in 2001; since then, it has grown to over 180 participants. As Team Transplant has grown, so has their need for support from the greater community—through hands-on volunteering and financial donation opportunities.
Existing volunteer responsibilities include helping with training course set-up and takedown on Saturday mornings; recruiting water station volunteers; helping maintain the sign-in/sign-out notebook; attending occasional planning meetings and race day coordination. If you are unable to volunteer, your financial donation directly supports organ transplantation and allows Team Transplant to raise public awareness about organ donation and transplantation.
Transplant recipients, their friends, family and caregivers all may participate in Team Transplant. The team trains for two half marathons yearly: The Seattle Half Marathon in November and the Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in June. Training begins sixteen weeks ahead of time (in August and March respectively). Participants must be able to walk three miles before joining the team, and transplant recipients are required to have an updated physician release form each year. Everyone (transplant recipients and non-transplant recipients) must submit an updated registration form annually. Team Transplant members find their participation to be a wonderful way to celebrate the incredible gift of organ donation, to meet up with friends, to strive toward a goal and to improve their health and fitness.
