Interventional Cardiology Services

RHC Rapid Access for Referring Providers: 1.866.UWHEART (894.3278)

UW Medicine Regional Heart Center interventional cardiologists are experienced providers working on the forefront in treating complex coronary and structural heart disease. The UW cardiac catheterization lab was the first in the Pacific Northwest to implant a transcatheter aortic valve and continues to be a leader in this new technology. We utilize the latest technology and state-of- the- art procedures to provide services offered in few other places in the country including high-risk unprotected left main coronary artery stenting, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, paravalvular leak closure, and hybrid procedures.

Our interdisciplinary team of interventional cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and cardiovascular anesthesiologists, together with world- renowned echocardiographers and dedicated heart failure/transplant specialists work closely to assess the optimal treatment options for patients with complex heart disease. We also offer clinical trials to patients with advanced disease who may be eligible for more experimental treatments, such as stem cell therapy for chronic ischemia without options for revascularization, as well as closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) for relief of refractory migraines.

Coronary artery disease

  • Diagnostic right and left heart catheterization
  • Intravascular ultrasound
  • Fractional flow and coronary flow reserve evaluation
  • Transradial artery approach for diagnostic catheterization and intervention
  • Complex and high risk percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
  • Use of percutaneous left ventricular assist device to allow for high-risk PCI
  • Chronic total occlusion interventions
  • Intra-coronary Brachytherapy (radiation therapy) – for refractory restenosis
  • Stem cell therapies for chronic ischemia

Valve therapies

Structural and congenital heart disease

  • Atrial septal defect (ASD), patent foramen ovale (PFO), and ventricular septal defect (VSD) percutaneous closure
    • UW is a referral center, having performed these procedures over for over a decade, with expertise sufficient to proctor other physicians
  • Percutaneous closure of patent ductus arteriosus
  • Perctuaneous closure of coronary artery fistulas
  • Alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
  • Endovascular repair of aortic pseudoanerysms – innovative therapy developed at UW
  • Intracardiac echocardiography (ICE)
  • Pericardiocentesis

Heart failure

  • Percutaneous left ventricular support - for heart failure and to enable the performance of high-risk PCI
  • Endomyocardial and intra-cardiac tumor biopsy, including intra-cardiac echo guided biopsies
  • Stem cell therapies

Peripheral vascular disease

  • Peripheral vascular angiography and intervention
