Harborview Medical Center Research

​​​​Harborview Medical Center is also a world-renowned Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma and burn center and offers specialty care in nearly every area of medicine. ​​​​​​​​​​​​Beyond its academic center and patient care facility, Harborview Medical Center (HMC) is also home to the University of Washington Laboratory Research Programs. Operating as a joint effort with the University of Washington School of Medicine, HMC-based faculty obtain over $240 million in research and training funding per year, performing translational and basic research, as well as clinical studies and treatment trials, epidemiology, and health services research. Laboratory-based research includes cell biology, neurosciences, vascular biology, inflammation, infectious diseases, lung biology, and microbial pathogenesis.
 
Housed in two state-of-the art facilities at the Harborview Medical Center campus, the research laboratories and departments include:
 
The Research & Training Building (R&T) opened in 1999 and houses and auditorium, training and meeting rooms, and seven floors of laboratories and other research support space and offices. Approximately 40 faculty across thirteen departments and divisions conduct laboratory-based research at the building.
 
​Ninth and Jefferson Building
The Ninth and Jefferson Building (NJB) opened in 2009 and contains laboratories, laboratory support space, and offices. The building also houses the Department of Global Health, the Center for AIDS and STD, the Kidney Research Institute​, the Eye Institute, the Institute for Simulation and Interprofessional Studies (ISIS), and the Neurosciences Program​.​
