
Fred Silverstein, UW Clinical Professor of Medicine, has been selected as the 2013 Inventor of the Year for his remarkable contributions to the invention and development of a variety of medical devices that have positively impacted the work of gastroenterologists and their patients worldwide.
Dr. Silverstein’s body of work has been groundbreaking for advancing the field of gastroenterology and epitomizes the collaborative spirit which makes a profound difference in science and medicine. He holds well over 50 patents, with eight more pending. His products are still on the market and have returned in excess of $1M to the University of Washington. He helped found two companies: Vision Sciences, a company dedicated to improving endoscopic cleaning to reduce risk of cross-contamination in patients; and Lucent Medical Systems. He has authored over 135 medical papers as a tenured professor at the University of Washington. After winning “Teacher of the Year” from the Medical School four times, in 1994 he was given the “Teacher of the Year in Perpetuity” Award. (Click here for complete bio).

This year’s Inventor of the Year Event will be held at South Lake Union on November 7, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. In recognition of how consistently Dr. Silverstein has brought in talented technical and engineering partners to collaborate on his inventions, the theme of this year’s event will be ‘A Celebration of Engineering and Medical Collaboration’. We will host a panel discussion on how medical and engineering researchers can find and work with each other. In addition, there will be a poster session showcasing promising research being done at the UW.
Dr. Silverstein joins many other exemplary research scientists honored with the Inventor of the Year award.
