Pathology at Harborview

Pathology at Harborview 325 9th Ave., Seattle, WA 98104 206.744.3145

Pathology is the medical specialty that examines tissues and fluids to diagnose disease. A pathologist is a medical doctor who assists your primary care physician and other medical specialists in treatment decisions by reviewing laboratory test results and biopsy specimens for any abnormalities that may require additional care. In most cases, patients never meet their pathologists and might not even be aware of what an important part of the medical team they are.

The team at UW Medicine Pathology is committed to providing timely and accurate diagnosis of biopsies and other material by highly qualified faculty, skilled technicians and dedicated staff members. Our expert consultation services feature proven diagnostic protocols, innovative technology and exemplary customer service.

UW Medicine Pathology provides clinical services in all areas of pathology, providing diagnostic procedures and analysis for more than 80,000 cases a year. We provide comprehensive diagnostic and personalized consultative services to physicians, community hospitals, independent laboratories and other health-care organizations, by combining sophisticated testing and informatics capabilities of fully accredited laboratories with the resources of an academic and teaching institution in its delivery of pathology services.

Our operations are based at the UW School of Medicine, UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Pathology faculty members also serve at Seattle Children's, VA Puget Sound Health System and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

These collaborative efforts have generated innovative studies in the basic mechanisms of disease applied to diagnostic pathology - the foundation of our cutting edge research discoveries, and of our training programs for graduate students, residents and fellows. UW Medicine Pathology is one of the top ranked research departments in the country, receiving 69 research grants totaling nearly $34 million from the National Institute of Health in 2008.
