Manual therapy is a hands-on therapeutic practice that uses a broad group of skilled hand techniques and exercises, applied at varying speeds and amplitudes. Physical therapists use manual therapy to mobilize and manipulate soft tissues and skeletal joints. Manual therapy techniques aim to decrease pain, swelling and inflammation while increasing muscle, joint and neural functional mobility as well as coordination and recruitment. Manual therapy is most effective when used in combination with therapeutic exercise and patient education, and can provide vast improvements in functionality and pain management. We have found that manual therapy in combination with therapeutic exercise and patient education provides optimal results.

Manual therapy is an especially effective, hands-on approach to neck and back injuries that presents therapists with instant feedback. Home participation is a key element of our programs as there is no substitute for patients’ involvement in their own care.

Each comprehensive evaluation begins with listening to our patients. Once we understand the problem from our patient’s point of view, we will complete an objective assessment using functional measurements to determine how the foot, ankle, knee, hip and spine all connect. Finally we’ll videotape you in motion, using our sophisticated four-camera system. You’ll be simultaneously filmed from the front, back, side and top. We’ll observe you walking and running, with and without shoes. Once the exam is complete, our team will perform a frame-by-frame evaluation of your gait and running mechanics and summarize recommendations in a report to your referring physician.
