Our patients come from all over the world, representing many cultures and speaking many languages. Interpreter Services is committed to making sure that all patients have equitable access to our medical services 24-hours a day, seven days a week, regardless of language or culture.
Interpreter Services at Harborview Medical Center offers language and communication support by providing:
- Free and professional medical interpretation and translation (in person, by telephone and by video) in more than 80 languages and dialects, including Spanish, Somali Vietnamese, Amharic, Cantonese, Russian, Cambodian, Mandarin, Oromo and Tigrigna.Â
- Communication assistance for patients who are Deaf or hard of hearing through the use of American Sign Language, TTY machines and other aids.
Community House Calls Program works with members of refugee and immigrant communities. Specially trained bilingual and bicultural staff provide a range of services including interpretation, cultural mediation, case management, advocacy, follow-up, assistance in finding English as a second language (ESL) classes and citizenship classes, coordination of patient care, health education and home visits. Community House Calls Programs currently offers these services to patients who speak Amharic, Cambodian, Oromo, Somali, Spanish, Tigrigna and Vietnamese.

Ethnomed, an electronic database of information about cultural beliefs, health-care needs and community resources of immigrant communities in Seattle and throughout the United States.
