CPR for Healthcare Providers

The medical school requires that, before the start of classes, you complete an AHA-approved course in BLS for Healthcare Providers (also known as Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) or CPR for the Professional Rescuer. You can find a class in your area by visiting the American Heart Association website or the American Red Cross.

Current Students

One organization in Seattle that frequently trains our students is the Cascade Training Center. To receive the UW SOM discounted rate through Cascade, you will need to register by PHONE and use the coupon code provided in your compliance reminder email.

In accordance with compliance policy on page 40 of the Student Handbook, CPR/BLS certifications must be renewed every two years and must be renewed prior to the six week block in which they expire.

Note: Please note: ACLS, PALS, NRP, EMT, or other certifications do not substitute for Healthcare Provider level BLS certification or Professional Rescuer CPR certification. Online courses are not accepted.

Incoming First Year Students

All incoming first year students will be required to participate in BLS/CPR training at their site during orientation.

Note: Please note: ACLS, PALS, NRP, EMT, or other certifications do not substitute for Healthcare Provider level BLS certification or Professional Rescuer CPR certification. Online courses are not accepted.

Once you receive your BLS/CPR card, please store a copy of the card in a safe place. You must keep your certification current throughout your 4 years in medical school. You will be required to renew through the SOM at the end of your second year.
