Walsh, Thomas J.

Thomas James Walsh, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Walsh is a UW assistant professor of urology whose clinical interests include male reproductive and sexual medicine and surgery. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Oregon, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He then received his medical degree from Northwestern University, where he garnered the highest academic honors and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

Dr. Walsh completed his general and urologic surgical training at the UW, during which time he served as a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Scholar and received a master's degree in epidemiology at the UW School of Public Health. He completed a fellowship in male infertility and erectile dysfunction at the University of California, San Francisco and directed the UCSF Center for Male Reproductive Health before returning to UW Medicine.

Patient Care Philosophy
He believes in a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of male infertility and sexual dysfunction. He works closely with experts in female reproductive health to offer comprehensive care to infertile couples. He integrates the most advanced and minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment modalities into his practice.

Scope Of Care
All aspects of male reproductive and sexual dysfunction. He is a fellow-trained microsurgeon and commonly performs microscopic vasectomy reversal and varicocele surgery.

Common conditions treated: male infertility, reversal of vasectomy,  azoospermia, varicocele, ejaculatory dysfunction, ejaculatory duct obstruction, male contraception (vasectomy), male sexual dysfunction, erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease and hypogonadism (low testosterone).

Common diagnostic tests and procedures: semen analysis, sperm morphology, semen reactive oxygen testing, sperm DNA fragmentation testing (COMET), fine-needle aspirate mapping of the testes, penile ultrasound and duplex doppler, and penile vascular testing.

Common surgeries performed: sperm identification and retrieval, microscopic epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA), Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA), testicular sperm extraction (TESE), microsurgery, vasectomy reversal, epididymal reconstruction, varicocele ligation, penile vascular surgery, spermatocele excision, conventional surgery, vasectomy (no-scalpel technique), penile prosthesis, testicular prosthesis and Peyronie’s reconstruction.

Personal Interests
He loves spending time with his family. He enjoys the outdoors and is an avid cyclist and sailor.

Clinical Interests
Microscopic vasectomy reversal, advanced sperm retrieval techniques in azoospermic men, no scalpel vasectomy, penile prosthetic surgery, surgical treatment of Peyronie's disease and hormonal therapy for infertility and hypogonadism.

Research Interests
His background in epidemiology and public health guides most of his research interests. The causes of male infertility and its impacts on the individual and society are poorly understood, as are the outcomes of infertility treatments. The underlying aim of Dr. Walsh’s work is to assemble populations of fertile and infertile men of reproductive age, to better understand the impacts of genetics, the environment and other health conditions on male reproductive health, and to understand how male infertility may impact general health later in life.

Teaching Interests
He involves students in all aspects of patient care when appropriate.
