Dr. Bowdle is a professor of anesthesiology and pain medicine and an adjunct professor of pharmaceutics. He is a specialist in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and perioperative transesophageal echocardiography. He is also an expert on anesthetic pharmacology and patient safety.

Dr. Bowdle’s current research primarily involves safety issues pertaining to central venous catheterization, anesthetic drug administration, infection prevention and the use of checklists. He is also interested in the use of simulation for teaching and for enhancing patient safety.

Dr. Bowdle earned a B.S. degree from the University of California at Davis in 1974. He completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Washington and was awarded M.D. and Ph.D. (pharmacology) degrees in 1980. He was an intern at Virginia Mason Medical Center and completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Washington in 1983.

Dr. Bowdle has been a faculty member since 1983. He was the chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology for 10 years, from 2001-2011. Currently he is the medical director of Anesthesiology Technical Services and the director of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Simulation.

He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia. He is the section editor for Anesthetic Pharmacology for the on-line medical knowledge resource, “UpToDate”. Dr. Bowdle is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the National Board of Echocardiography (Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography). He is a fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography.
