Patient Care Philosophy

As a psychologist, I am especially honored and humbled to work with patients who have been challenged by illness, injury or disability and who come through this struggle with a rich quality of life. I have a collaborative care philosophy where a patient is actively engaged and in control of their care and I can provide support and guidance and teach new skills in whatever way they need to succeed.

Personal Interests

Sports, hanging out with my children, photography and the outdoors.

Clinical Interests

Clinical interests in pain management, coping with injury and disability, management of PTSD, depression and body image concerns following injury, behavior management and pediatric mental health.

Research Interests

Research interests in hypnosis for pain and itch, long term adjustment to burn injury, coping and resiliency.

"Dr. Wiechman is an associate professor and the attending psychologist on the Burn and Pediatric Trauma Service and Pediatric Primary Care Clinic at Harborview Medical Center. She is an expert in the area of adjustment to injury or disability, nonpharmacological pain management and pediatric mental health.

She also conducts research on the use of hypnosis for pain and itch, as well as, long term adjustment to burn injuries. She has over 50 publications in these areas. In addition, she has had a long interest in performance enhancement, positive psychology and posttraumatic growth following trauma.

Dr. Wiechman earned her bachelor's degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara, her master’s degree in exercise science from the University of Arizona and came to the University of Washington for her doctoral degree in psychology. During this time, she worked for the University of Washington Huskies as a sport psychologist. She then completed her residency and fellowship at the University of Washington’s School of Medicine where she began working at Harborview Medical Center. She has been on faculty at the University of Washington School of Medicine and working on the burn unit for nearly 15 years.

Dr. Wiechman is board certified in rehabilitation psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Burn Association, and is a member of the board of trustees with the American Burn Association.
