Dr. Munsen lives in Seattle, Washington. His personal interests include skiing, hiking, biking, singing, playing the piano and attending opera, classical and chamber music performances.

Clinical Interests

Macular diseases such as macular hole and macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and eye trauma.

New and investigative treatments for macular degeneration.

Dr. Munsen was born and raised in Story City, Iowa. He earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. He completed his medical degree at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He completed his internship at Maricopa County General Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Prior to his residency, Dr. Munsen served in the US Air Force for two years as a general medical officer. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed his fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Munsen started practice in Seattle in 1980 at the Eye Clinic of Seattle, and was the founding partner of Vitreoretinal Associates in Seattle in 1982, where he practiced until 2006. He joined the faculty at the University of Washington as a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology in 2006, and was promoted to clinical associate professor in 2008. He is an active clinician at the UW Medicine Eye Institute, seeing patients two days per week and spending the remainder of his time performing surgery and teaching. Dr. Munsen was instrumental in forming the Community Advisory Board for the UW Medicine Eye Institute in 2011 and has been an active member of the board since then.
