Research Interests

Dr. Vedder's research laboratory examines the mechanism of reperfusion injury, which occurs when blood re-enters tissue, and novel methods of controlling this process through modulation of adhesion interaction between leukocytes and endothelium.

Dr. Vedder is a professor of surgery and of orthopaedics and heads the Division of Plastic Surgery. He is an expert in plastic and reconstructive surgery, hand surgery, and reconstructive microsurgery.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1981. He came to Seattle for an internship and residency in surgery and then went to Massachusetts General Hospital for a residency in plastic surgery. He was also a research fellow in surgery at the UW, a fellow at Harvard Medical School, and did a fellowship in hand surgery at the UW. He is board-certified in surgery, with added qualifications in hand surgery, and is also board-certified in plastic surgery.
