Bio

Dr. Sherman is a UW clinical associate professor of rehabilitation medicine and the director of the Clinical Rehabilitation Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship and the HMC Rehabilitation Psychology Consultation Service.

He specializes in treating people with brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other traumas both immediately after their injuries and long term. Dr. Sherman earned his bachelor's degree at the George Washington University in Washington D.C. and his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Kentucky at Lexington.

He came to the UW as an intern in 1997 and has been on the faculty here since 1998.

Patient Care Philosophy

My goal is to help individuals overcome whatever barriers prevent them from achieving a vital, meaningful, productive and functional life. Through a collaborative process, I work to help individuals acquire new skills, strategies, behaviors and attitudes to more effectively deal with the challenges life brings upon all of us. I believe in establishing therapy goals and periodically reassessing progress toward these goals.

Personal Interests

I enjoy hiking, backpacking, kayaking and trying to keep my two children out of too much trouble.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Sherman's clinical interests include helping patients learn to live as fully and functionally as possible with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, other physical traumas, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder and pain.

Research Interests

Studying disparities in the delivery of mental health care in the rehabilitation setting; biobehavioral mechanisms of acute and chronic pain; and the relationship between pain and posttraumatic stress disorder.
