Patient Care Philosophy

I believe in using the best and most appropriate imaging test to diagnose the clinical problem and working hard to keep provide our patients with the latest imaging technology.

Radiology, and particularly MRI, is an exciting and dynamic field. It amazes me how fast new developments are made, and how much better it allows us to evaluate not just the anatomy of our patients, but to begin really seeing into the physiology of the disease process itself.

Dr. Maki is a professor of radiology and the director of body MRI at the University of Washington. He specializes in cross-sectional imaging of the body using CT, MR and ultrasound. He has a strong interest in new magnetic resonance technologies and their application to oncology, cardiac and vascular MRI. Dr. Maki directs the UW cardiovascular MR program and performs research on cardiac MRI, MR angiography, MR contrast agents and novel MR imaging techniques.

Dr. Maki divides his time between clinical care reading primarily oncologic and cardiovascular MR and CT examinations, teaching trainees (residents and fellows), and performing research. He has been with the University of Washington system since 1998.

Dr. Maki earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of California before attending Duke University to complete both his M.D. and Ph.D.. He then interned in Seattle at Virginia Mason Medical Center, followed by radiology residency and a MRI fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Prior to working at the UW, Dr. Maki spent one year on faculty at the University of Michigan. He moved to Seattle in 1998, with his initial primary UW appointment at the Puget Sound VA Hospital. He was named division director of body MRI in 2003 and began dividing his time between the UW and the VA. In 2011, Dr. Maki was promoted to full professor. He now practices at UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

Dr. Maki is board certified in diagnostic radiology with advanced fellowship training in MRI. He is the president of the MR Angiography Working Group, an organization of radiologists and physicists working to improve the ability of MRI to image the blood vessels. Dr. Maki is a member of numerous radiological societies, and teaches and presents research both within the US and internationally. He was listed as one of Seattle’s “Top Doctors” by SeattleMet in both 2012 and 2013.
