Dr. Fine is a clinical pathologist and currently serves as the chairman of the Department of Laboratory Medicine. His education and training include undergraduate degree in mathematics, an M.D. from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1972, residency in clinical pathology at the University of Minnesota completed in 1977 and an NLM fellowship leading to M.S. in biometry and health information systems 1977 from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Fine joined the faculty of the University of Washington in 1977 in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. He served as the head of the Computer Division in the department, managing one of only two computer systems in our hospitals. He was also the co-director of the Enzyme Section in the Clinical Chemistry Division.

Over time his responsibilities expanded to include many years as residency director and head of the Clinical Chemistry Division. In 1994, Dr. Fine became the second chairman of the department and in 2005 also took on the responsibility of chief information officer for UW Medicine.
