Patient Care Philosophy

As a physician at the University of Washington, I am involved with the care of patients who frequently are acutely critically ill and face challenging medical decisions. I believe in a collaborative, interprofessional approach to patient-focused care and find personal satisfaction in working alongside patients and their families to understand their choices and to help them improve their well-being and health in a manner that is respectful and meaningful to them as individuals.

Personal Interests

Fly fishing and skiing.

General thoracic surgery (non-oncological); ECLS/ECMO; surgical critical care.

Research Interests

Health outcomes in CT critical care and quality improvement in critical care.

Dr. Cheng is a UW assistant professor of surgery, and his clinical practice consists of general thoracic surgery and critical care medicine. He currently also serves as the surgical co-director of the University of Washington Medical Center cardiothoracic intensive care unit.

Dr. Cheng earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard College and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He subsequently completed his general surgery training at the University of Colorado. He came to the University of Washington for his cardiothoracic surgery training. He subsequently also completed his fellowship training in surgical critical care at UW.

Dr. Cheng is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is board certified in general surgery, thoracic surgery and surgical critical care. He is actively involved with the Society of Thoracic Surgery.
