Launched in 1974, the Science in Medicine lecture series spans the Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters and consists of thirteen lectures which recognize the outstanding research of our faculty. The lectures include:
- Four regular SIM lectures
- Two New Investigator lectures
- One WWAMI lecture
- One Distinguished Scientist lecture, and
- One Annual lecture
With the exception of the WWAMI and Annual lectures, all speakers are drawn from the UW School of Medicine faculty. Nominations are solicited from School of Medicine department chairs in January, to the Faculty Council on Research for consideration in April.
The Distinguished Scientist is usually a senior faculty member who has had a long, distinguished career. New Investigator lecturers are junior faculty who are making great strides in their area of research. Nominations for the WWAMI lecturer are solicited from the WWAMI Directors in each state. The Annual lecturer is invited from somewhere outside of the University of Washington. The New Investigator and Annual lecturer receive honoraria for their lectures.
