Bioscience Experience - Summer 2008

Share your lab for a few days with young scientists this summer!

THE BIOSCIENCE EXPERIENCE

An Introduction to Basic Science Research for Underrepresented Minority Students

BUILDING THE PIPELINE
The School of Medicine (SOM) is continuing its work to develop pipeline initiatives aimed at recruiting underrepresented minorities to biological science doctoral programs.

In partnership with the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMCA) and their summer programs, the SOM has created a ’bioscience experience’  that serves to complement the medical/dental education and training that their minority students receive, while introducing another facet of science.

VOLUNTEERING YOUR LAB
Volunteer your time by providing lab sessions integrating your own research into age–appropriate short hands-on lessons.  Lab facilitators could include faculty, post docs and graduate students. Labs wishing to volunteer should be located within or near the Health Sciences complex locations.

UNDERGRADUATES: 2 hour Sessions
Summer Medical Dental Education Program (SMDEP) includes
• 80 minority undergraduate students (rising sophmores or juniors) from across from the country
• Students may have completed at least one year of college biology or chemistry
• Labs groups to include 5-6 students per lab
• Concurrent 2-hour lab sessions
• Will have access to BL-1 & BL-2 labs

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
Introductory overview:

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: 1-Hour Sessions
U-DOC’s “Bioscience Day” will be held Monday, July 14th from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.  This includes three 50-minute hands-on lab sessions, ending with a panel discussion where participants discuss lab research and academic expectations.

U-DOC includes
• 20 Washington state minority high school students (rising  juniors or seniors)
• At least one year of high school biology or chemistry
• Lab groups to include 4 students per lab
• Will have access to BL-1 labs only for 50 minute sessions

WHAT WE WILL PROVIDE
We are very excited by the opportunity to partner with you and your labs, and hope that this experience provides you with the sense that you are making a difference in the educational roads the students travel, where medicine and science intersect creating a life-lasting and enriching event.

To help you, the Dean’s Office will arrange the following:
• Student orientation for lab safety session(s)
• Overview information sheet for volunteer labs
• Organization of panel discussions
• Answer any questions or concerns you may have about either program

We sincerely appreciate your time and consideration in making this an educationally rewarding summer for these future scientists.

Thank you!
