Harborview’s Stroke Clinic (part of the Neurosciences Clinics) is a referral clinic for comprehensive diagnosis of stroke risk and treatment modalities.
The clinic provides care to patients with cerebrovascular disease, whether they have suffered a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), or are at risk for stroke or TIA.
We offer a comprehensive range of preventative, diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational services designed to reduce the morbidity and mortality of a stroke.
The Stroke Clinic has the following goals:
- Reduce the incidence of stroke through identification and control of risk factors for stroke.
- Reduce morbidity and mortality of a stroke through emergency care for patients with acute stroke, diagnostic services, treatment options, and a comprehensive rehabilitation program,
- Act as an information resource,
- Serve as a center for clinical research in stroke prevention and treatment.
STROKE PREVENTION is a key component of services. Individual care plans for each patient are based on an initial evaluation that may include a complete medical history and physical examination, stroke-risk / lifestyle education, and ancillary tests.
Diagnostic Services
- Cerebrovascular Laboratory (Carotid Artery Duplex Doppler and Transcranial Doppler).
- Cardiology Diagnostic Laboratory (transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, Holter monitoring).
- Laboratory Diagnostics (complete hematologic services).
- Lipid Evaluation (treatment of metabolic disorders).
- Surgical and Interventional Neuroradiology services.
- Consultations with Rehabilitation Medicine, Nutrition, and Neurosurgery.
Harborview's Patient and Family Resource Center is also available for information and health & wellness classes, including a smoking cessation program.
The full services of UW Medicine are also available for other specialty services or hospitalization.
Appointments and Referrals
New and returning appointments can be made through the 4 West Medical Clinic appointment desk. (General phone contact listed below).
Patients on managed care plans usually must be referred by a primary care provider. Self-referrals are acceptable in certain circumstances.
Providers making a referral should complete a UW Medicine Referral Request (Adobe PDF). Questions about referrals or about the Stroke Clinic and its services should be directed to the Nurse and/or Scheduling Coordinator.
