Mental Health and Addiction Services

Harborview Mental Health Services (HMHS)

HMHS provides quality mental health services, actively contributes to public policy, develops and provides teaching, training and consultation, and conducts research on issues pertaining to mental health. HMHS is particularly dedicated to providing quality services to Harborview Medical Center’s mission population.

Harborview Addictions Program (HAP)

HAP, a state-certified treatment unit, is one of many programs offered by HMHS. The Addictions Program , established in 1999, provides treatment in an outpatient setting to assist people with chemical abuse and dependency problems. Treatment is also provided to individuals with co-occurring chemical dependency and mental health disorders. Clients are treated for the physiological, psychological, emotional and spiritual effects of their addiction. Most of our programs require abstinence from alcohol and all other mood altering substances. Counseling methods encompass a variety of evidenced-based techniques that have been scientifically proven to reduce and/or eliminate inappropriate substance use. Treatment is individually tailored to meet each patient’s needs.

Outpatient Clinics, Services, and Programs

Crisis Intervention Service

This walk-in clinic coordinates with other Harborview departments and community agencies to serve people with mental health crises. Services include initial screening and assessment, psychiatric evaluation, emergency medications, case management, short-term therapy, and referrals. If requested, assistance may also be provided to families of patients with acute psychiatric problems.

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)

The harm reduction model is used in this program to treat substance abuse; and environmental controls such as Social Security Representative Payee Services and monitored medication are used to reduce symptoms and provide social supports to help people remain in a community setting. Many clients receive daily contact and home visits to assist with stability.

Dialectical Behavioral Treatment (DBT)

This program serves clients who exhibit self-harm behavior or threats and are high utilizers of emergency rooms and hospitals. DBT, developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington, is considered the best practice approach in treating patients with these behaviors. This is an intensive program, utilizing group and individual therapy, skills acquisition, coaching and case management services.

Geropsychiatric Service (GPS)

This multi-disciplinary team provides training, communication, education and consultation to agencies involved with the treatment of geriatric patients. In addition, GPS provides assessments for patients at adult family homes, day care centers, and assisted living facilities. The outpatient clinic treats older adults living in the community and provides psychiatric assessments, medication monitoring and case management services.

Rehabilitation and Recovery Program

This program provides treatment for patients with serious and persistent mental illness who require a spectrum of services to advance in their recovery, including treatment for the dual diagnoses of severe mental illness and substance abuse. Services include case management, group therapy, medication monitoring, money management, social skills enhancement, and day treatment.

Clinic-Wide Services

The client lounge provides a safe and comfortable environment where clients can find support and socialization. Shower and laundry facilities are also available.
Housing services assists clients in applying for, getting and keeping subsidized housing. Housing staff provide on-site services to clean and sober residences, agency-operated facilities and free market apartment buildings, including skills training and monitoring that enable residents to maintain housing.
