History of the UW Medicine Regional Burn Center

Before the UW Medicine Regional Burn Center at Harborview opened in 1974, patients with severe burns were cared for at area hospitals by physicians and nurses who were untrained in the complexities of burn treatment.

Dedicated to providing improved treatment for patients with severe burns, UW Medicine recruited a team of highly skilled surgeons and nurses from Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas to establish the center at Harborview. Nearly 40 years later, Harborview has become one of the finest burn and trauma centers in the country.

Innovative research, better care

Over the last ten years, UW Medicine Regional Burn Center researchers have received over $50 million in federal and local funding to improve wound care and burn treatments.
