Patient Care Philosophy

Our health is greatly influenced by how we choose to live our lives. A healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a good diet, preventive care and prompt attention to symptoms and illness when they occur are the foundation of good health. I enjoy working with my patients to maintain and improve their health, using exercise and diet as the foundation and medications if needed, and I especially enjoy getting to know them as people.

Personal Interests

I am a year-round bicycle commuter, and enjoy bicycle touring, ski skating and backpacking.

Clinical Interests

Primary care internal medicine; internal medicine hospital care; the application of computing in healthcare.

Research Interests

Research in clinical computing; medical informatics; electronic health records.

Dr. Payne is a UW professor of medicine and attending physician in the General Internal Medicine Center at UWMC-Roosevelt.

Dr. Payne earned his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his M.D. from the University of Washington. He served as an intern and resident in internal medicine at the University of Colorado. For 30 years, he has been a general internist providing personalized primary care and hospital care. He also serves as UW Medicine's medical director of information technology services and is interested in how information technology can better help support patients and health professionals.

After his clinical training, he was a research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. In 2012, he received the Top Doctor Award from Seattle Met Magazine.

He is board certified in internal medicine, and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) and of the American College of Medical Informatics. He is also board certified in clinical informatics.
