2013 UW School of Medicine Alumni Awards
 

This year, three alumni were recognized for their professional achievements and dedicated efforts to the field of medicine. Each of the award recipients embodies UW Medicine’s mission: to improve the health of the public.

Catherine Otto, M.D. ’79, Fel. ’85, is the recipient of the 2013 UW School of Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Otto is a leading authority on valvular heart disease and echocardiography, adult congenital heart disease and aortic stenosis, among other areas. Read more

 

Juliette Engel, M.D. ’74, Res. ’75, ’78, is the 2013 UW School of Medicine’s Humanitarian Alumni Award recipient. Dr. Engel was a UW assistant professor and director of diagnostic ultrasound when she sold her medical practice in Bellevue, Wash., and founded the MiraMed Institute in 1992. She had the vision of improving health care and human rights for women and infants in the former U.S.S.R. Read more

John Stamatoyannopoulos, M.D. ’95, is the recipient of the 2013 UW School of Medicine Alumni Early Achievement Award. Dr. Stamatoyannopoulos came to UW Medicine as an assistant professor in the departments of genome sciences and medicine in 2005 and was appointed associate professor in 2010. Read more

 

A Record Reunion Weekend!
 

2013 Reunion WeekendThe 2013 Reunion Weekend saw a record number of attendees: 450 people representing 29 classes and hailing from 25 states. Fifteen events were held around Seattle, including the honor cord ceremony, which recognized alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago. 

2013 Reunion WeekendThe festivities continued Friday evening with more than 375 people attending individual class celebrations. On Saturday, more than 100 people came to UW Medicine at South Lake Union to hear about the future of vision sciences from Russell Van Gelder, M.D., Ph.D., the chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and director of the UW Medicine Eye Institute. Guests also enjoyed lunch and a tour of the new research complex. The weekend concluded with an exciting all-school reception atop the Space Needle, where the alumni award winners were honored.
