Dr. Christopher J. L. Murray Biography

Dr. Christopher "Chris" J.L. Murray is a professor of global health at the University of Washington. Before coming to the UW in May of 2007, Murray was the Richard Saltonstall Professor of Public Policy, Professor of Social Medicine, and drector of the Harvard Initiative for Global Health at Harvard University. He joined Harvard after spending five years at the World Health Organization, where he led the Evidence and Information for Policy Cluster.

 A physician and health economist, Murray focused his early work on tuberculosis control and, with Alan Lopez, the development of the Global Burden of Disease methods and applications. Recently, Murray has contributed to the development of a range of new methods and empirical studies to strengthen the basis for population health measurement and cost-effectiveness analysis.  He has authored or edited eight books, many book chapters and more than 90 journal articles in internationally peer-reviewed publications.

Originally from New Zealand, Murray holds a B.A. from Harvard College, a D.Phil. from Oxford University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School.
