First Choice Health and the Washington Academy of Family Physicians
Dr. Abraham Bergman, Chief of Pediatrics at Harborview Medical Center, is the 2008 Scribner Courage in Health Care Award Recipient. Dr. Bergman has been selected for his enormous contributions to the health and welfare of American children, especially to children in the Northwest.
Integra Foundation
Dr. Randall Chesnut, Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and based at Harborview Medical Center, has been appointed to the Integra Foundation Endowed Professorship in Neurotrauma at UW Medicine. Dr. Chesnut is nationally and internationally recognized for his expertise in trauma to the brain and spinal cord.
Checkbook Magazine
According to the latest issue of Puget Sound Consumers' Checkbook magazine, Harborvew Medical Center was rated as one of the area's top-rated emergency departments for both complex and simple urgent cases. Checkbook collected more than 2,000 reports on emergency departments by surveying people who had used them, collected opinions from more than 300 area physicians, and collected detailed information on emergency department staffing to gauge the quality of care provided by local facilities.

The National Library of MedicineEllen Howard, Harborview and UWMC librarian, was selected as the recipient of its 2008 outreach award. Howard was recognized for her contributions to medical education and for her work on behalf of underserved communities through Harborview’s EthnoMed Web site,

Commuter Challenge
Parking and Commuter Services won a Diamond Award from Commuter Challenge for outstanding efforts to reduce employee commuter trips. The award recognizes Harborview's organizational leadership and commitment to helping employees get out of single occupany vehicles. Commuter Challenge is a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding solutions for regional transportation issues.
Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington
Dr. Elinor Graham, UW associate professor of pediatrics and Harborview attending physician, was selected by the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington for its 2008 Physician Leadership Award.
Volunteers of America
Kim Lundgren, Community House Calls, has been recognized for outstanding volunteer efforts in the Vietnamese community by the Volunteers of America Senior Companion Program.

National Disaster Medical System
Tara White, Respiratory Therapy, was named the 2007 distinguished member of the year by the National Disaster Medical System. White was recognized for her work on the International Medical Surgical Response Team, which has been deployed to several recent disasters, including the California wildfires in October 2007.
LifeCenter Northwest
Dr. Michael Souter, medical co-director of Harborview’s Neurocritical Care Center, has received the Organ Donation Individual Excellence Award from LifeCenter Northwest. The award recognizes Souter’s many contributions to improving processes and patient care surrounding organ donation.
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS)
Dr. Brad Henley, UW professor of orthopaedics and sports medicine, has been appointed to the board of directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Henley will serve as secretary for the AAOS Specialty Societies in 2008/2009.
NW Lipid Research at UW Medicine
Robert H. Knopp, professor of medicine and head of the Section of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at Harborview Medical Center, has been named the first holder of the Robert B. McMillen Professorship in Lipid Research at UW Medicine.

Awarded to Harborview Medical Center for outstanding performance in the Discharge Handoff Communications Benchmarking project
Environmental Protection Agency
The UW Northwest Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit is one of ten national winners of the 2007 Children's Environmental Health Excellence Award. These awards recognize efforts to protect children from environmental health risks at the location, regional, national and international level.

Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission
Dr. Darrell Owens, UW clinical assistant professor and director of the Palliative Care Consult Service at Harborview, has been appointed to the Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission by Gov. Christine Gregoire. Owens will serve as a representative of nursing practitioners through June 30, 2009.
National Association of Healthcare Access Management
Denise M. Leverentz , director of Business and Decision Support and Financial Counseling, and Cindy Sleighter, manager of Financial Counseling, have earned the Certified Healthcare Access Management credential. This credential is widely recognized as an indication of demonstrated knowledge essential to the practice of patient access management.
American Hospital Association (AHA)Harborview Medical Center is the recipient of the prestigious 2007 Foster G. McGaw Prize, honoring the outstanding leadership, unwavering spirit of excellence and remarkable achievements in its community. This is one of the most esteemed honors of excellence in community service in healthcare. The Foster G. McGaw Prize recognizes healthcare organizations that set a high standard for improving the lives of people in their communities. The Foster G. McGaw Prize is sponsored by the American Hospital Association (AHA), The Baxter International Foundation and the Cardinal Health Foundation.
