2008 Montana WWAMI Premedical Conference
The second Montana WWAMI Premedical conference was held on April 12th, 2008 at the MSU-Bozeman campus. Around 90 students participated in the event. Participants learned about the application process, financial aid, the MCAT, and other pertinent information about the University of Washington School of Medicine and the WWAMI program. The participants also met with a few current University of Washington WWAMI students from Montana. The next Montana WWAMI Premedical conference will most likely be held in Spring 2010.

Montana TRUST
As part of the application process, Montana WWAMI students can now apply to participate in a focused rural and urban underserved track. The goal of this track, called Montana TRUST (Targeted Rural Underserved Track), is to allow for a focused medical school experience in rural and urban underserved care, with the eventual goal of returning physicians to practice in the rural and urban underserved areas of Montana. Montana TRUST students will have multiple opportunities to experience first hand the joys and satisfaction of practicing medicine in a rural or urban underserved community.

Billings, Montana (population 100,000) is home to three major colleges and has an economy driven by agriculture, energy, transportation and tourism. Billings, the Yellowstone County seat and the largest city in Montana, is known as the “Magic City.” Yellowstone National Park is less than three hours from Billings and can be visited by car in the summer and in the winter by snowmobile or snow coach. Recreational opportunities abound in Billings with fishing, hunting, kayaking, canoeing, and skiing to name just a few. Other cultural attractions include the Billings Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, The Alberta Bair Theater for the Performing Arts, the Billings Studio Theater, and various arts, history, and natural history museums. With two modern, fully-equipped hospitals, forty clinics, and hundreds of physicians, Billings’ advanced healthcare offerings services people from within the four-state regions of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
The Billings Track started in July 2008 with six third-year students participating. Billings offers all of the six required third-year clerkships and offers fourth-year clerkships in Neurology and Anesthesiology. Efforts are being made to add more fourth-year electives so that students can spend more of their fourth year in Billings. Community discounts are available for University of Washington students ranging from gym fees to reduced hospital cafeteria prices. Visit the Billings Track Web site at http://www.billingstrack.org/clerkship/peds.html for information on the Billings Track Office, clerkships, facilities, preceptors, and more.

Missoula, Montana (population 65,000) a jewel community in western Montana is vibrant and diverse with many opportunities for individuals seeking to experience the Montana lifestyle. Nicknamed the “Garden City,” it has mild winters and unbeatable summers. The economy of Missoula mirrors that of western Montana with a long history of natural resource-based industries (ranching, mining and forestry). Industries that support Missoula include: wood products, government, medical, education, small business and tourism. Located roughly halfway between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks its recreational opportunities include hiking, skiing, fishing, mountain biking, etc. Home of the University of Montana (with 13,000 students and many more “Griz Fans”) it is rich in cultural attractions ranging from symphony, arts, live theater, historical museums, shops, galleries, and numerous sporting activities and events. Missoula is home to two large hospitals, and numerous medical clinics offering quality health care to Missoula and many surrounding communities. Missoula serves as the major referral area for western Montana, including parts of Idaho.
The Missoula Track started in July 2008 with four third-year students participating. Missoula offers all six required third-year clerkships and currently offers fourth-year clerkships in Anesthesiology, Ophthalmology, and Neurology, with more to come. A housing stipend will be provided. Meals are provided free of charge by both hospitals and The University of Montana food service to all WWAMI students.
