Your clerkship dates must correspond with our Clinical Elective Block Schedule. You must start at the beginning of the block(s) and finish at the end of the block(s). There are no exceptions to these scheduled dates.
To Apply:
- Applications must be received at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the requested clerkship date.
- You must meet all requirements of the Visiting Student Clinical Elective Program.
- Complete the application form and return all materials to the address indicated. No action will be taken on your application until it is complete. Incomplete applications will automatically be returned.
- Include the $100.00 processing fee, payable to: University of Washington.
Cancellation:
You must withdraw at least 4 weeks before your starting date. Fees are non-refundable. All cancellations and changes must be made in writing to the Office of Academic Affairs.

Course # 681 – Peripheral Vascular Disease
Offered A, W, Sp – 4 Weeks, 8 Credits
This course introduces the student to problems relating to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic arterial and venous disorders. He/She is also introduced to the commonplace history and physical examination required to begin an initial workup. In addition, the student will be taught to use some of the available bedside devices which can further clarify the underlying nature of the problem. The clerkship will consist of seeing patients and working in the clinical setting at the VAMC. The student will be expected to work up all patients who enter the clinic or the hospital with vascular disease and present his/her findings to the Attending staff for discussion. At the end of this clerkship, the student should be able to formulate a general plan for the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with a wide variety of common vascular problems. Also, at the end of the rotation the student will be asked to give a short oral presentation on a topic of choice related to vascular surgery.

Course # 682 – Clinical Burn Care
Offered A, W, Sp, S – 4 Weeks, 8 Credits
As a subintern, the student will participate fully in the care of all burn patients and will be assigned specific patients as they are admitted during his/her rotation. He/She will be closely supervised, but will have major responsibility in his/her day-to-day care and participate in all decision making on his/her patients. Formal rounds are held twice weekly with a full complement of nursing staff, physical therapy, occupational therapy, social service, rehabilitation medicine and other interested parties. Students will be on-call every third night and will be responsible for patients admitted during their on-call days. An offering is made for either a four- or six-week rotation and a maximum of two students is allowed per period. The educational goals for the students include:

Course # 683 – Pediatric Surgery Externship
Offered A, W, Sp, S – 4 Weeks, 8 Credits
Students participating in the elective clerkship of pediatric surgery will be based primarily at the Children's Hospital and Medical Center. Instruction will stress surgical conditions peculiar to the particular age group. There will be obviously a preponderance of various congenital and neoplastic conditions which are amenable to surgical treatment. It is desirable that students who plan to take this elective prepare themselves by acquiring a reasonable background of knowledge in human embryology and genetics. At the end of the rotation the student will be asked to give a short oral presentation on a topic of choice related to pediatric surgery.

Course # 685 – Cardiothoracic Surgery Externship
Offered A, W, Sp, S – 4 Weeks, 8 Credits
The objective of this course is to permit the student to further develop a knowledge of cardiothoracic disease and to enhance his/her ability to manage comprehensively the problems encountered in cardiac and thoracic surgery patients. The student will serve as a subintern at University Hospital, functioning at the intern level under close supervision of the staff and housestaff. The student will participate in patient care (including diagnosis, preoperative and postoperative care) and learn about the cardiopulmonary hemodynamics. He/she will be exposed to a wide variety of both cardiac and thoracic disease entities and will participate in both open heart and thoracic procedures in the operating room. This is, as well, an excellent opportunity for the student to hone his/her skills in the clinical assessment of valvular heart disease and the EKG diagnosis of arrhythmias. This course will provide a chance for the student to use clinical skills in dealing with the medical as well as surgical problems of the patient with heart disease, and will permit the student to assume added responsibility in preparation for internship. At the end of the rotation the student will be asked to give a short oral presentation on a topic of choice related to cardiothoracic surgery.

Course # 686 – Plastic Surgery Clerkship and Preceptorship

The objective of the Plastic Surgery elective clerkship is twofold. First, it is designed to acquaint the students with the fundamental techniques of plastic surgery, particularly with regard to wound management. This is accomplished through didactic presentations and work in the Harborview Emergency Room and Operating Room. Secondly, it is designed to acquaint the student with a broad spectrum of topics related to Plastic Surgery, including facial trauma, burns, cleft lip and cleft palate, head and neck cancer, cosmetic surgery, skin tumors, hand surgery, and general reconstructive surgery. Students will rotate through University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Children's Hospital & Medical Center, and the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center. At each of these sites, the student is expected to participate in ward rounds, patient care, surgery, clinics, and all plastic surgery-related activities at those hospitals. There is no specific call schedule, but the student should carry a beeper in order to be contacted for interesting and instructive cases whenever they arise. At the end of the rotation the student will be asked to give a short oral presentation on a topic of choice related to plastic surgery.

Course # 687 – Transplantation Surgery Clerkship
Offered A, W, Sp, S – 4 Weeks, 8 Credits
The Transplant Division offers the senior medical student the chance to be involved in the care of liver, kidney, and pancreas transplant patients. The student will have the opportunity to expand his/her knowledge of immunology, operative surgical anatomy, ICU care, and the complex management of the patient with end-stage organ failure. The student will have the chance to fly to Alaska, Montana, Idaho, and Washington state with the organ procurement team. Responsibilities will be commensurate to an intern level and the student will assist with work rounds and is encouraged to attend all teaching conferences. At the end of the rotation the student will be asked to give a short oral presentation on a topic of choice related to solid organ transplantation.

Course # 688 – Subinternship in General Surgery
Offered A, W, Sp, S – 4 Weeks, 8 Credits
The objective of this course is to permit the student to further develop his/her knowledge of surgical disease and to enhance his/her ability to manage comprehensively the problems encountered in surgical patients. Students will function at the intern level under close supervision of the staff and housestaff. Diagnosis, preoperative care and postoperative care will be stressed. The management of surgical emergencies and outpatient follow-up of discharged patients will be included. The extern will attend all operative procedures on his/her assigned patients and will participate in all rounds and teaching conferences. This course will provide an opportunity for the student to perfect his/her clinical skills in dealing with medical as well as surgical problems and will permit the student to assume added responsibility. It should be of value as preparation for internship, particularly for the surgically oriented students. At the end of the rotation the student will be asked to give a short oral presentation on a topic of choice related to general surgery.

Course # 691 – Surgical Intensive Care Unit Subinternship
Offered A, W, Sp, S – 4 Weeks, 8 Credits
Surgery 691 is a four-week clerkship offered for fourth-year medical students interest in obtaining more exposure to surgical critical care. It is designed to augment the student’s understanding of physiologic principles and their application to management of critical illness. Students participate in the management of critically ill patients under the close supervision of the staff and house staff and participate in teaching rounds twice daily An oral presentation is required. This experience should prove invaluable to anyone considering surgery or primary care.
